Welcome to Riviera Hotel

The Riviera Hotel, located at 169 Clinton Ave in Newark, NJ, presents itself as a modest yet vital option for travelers seeking practical accommodations in the heart of the city. With a rating of 2.6, it’s clear the hotel carries a reputation that is far from luxurious. However, beneath its worn facade lies a story of resilience, community, and genuine human kindness.

Guests often remark on the hotel’s vintage charm, embracing an old-school ambiance rather than modern gloss. Brooke Lavecchia, one satisfied guest, appreciated the “vintage look” and the small, simple rooms that matched her needs perfectly. Beyond aesthetics, the hotel provides essential amenities such as free Wi-Fi, gated parking with security, air conditioning, and pet-friendly policies, making it a practical choice for longer stays or transient visitors.

The Riviera Hotel appears to serve not only tourists but also individuals and families in need of basic shelter and care. As Amy Susney poignantly noted, the hotel often houses transient guests who struggle to find stability elsewhere. There is an inherent humanity in offering refuge, even if the building itself lacks the resources to provide what might traditionally be called “the best care.” This reveals the hotel’s understated role as a sanctuary in an urban environment that can feel harsh and unforgiving.

One of the most touching accounts comes from Andrey Kurenkov, who described arriving at the hotel late at night with his family and no money. Despite policies and inconvenience, a staff member’s decision to allow them entry showcased compassion and flexibility, turning a dire situation into a moment of hope and rest. Such experiences add layers of meaning to the Riviera beyond its basic accommodations.

Though located in a neighborhood that may raise eyebrows, the hotel’s proximity to prominent sites like the Newark Museum of Art, Rutgers University, and downtown dining options provides visitors with cultural and practical access that enriches their stay. The absence of a pool and airport shuttle might disappoint some, but the availability of parking and Wi-Fi helps maintain the hotel’s functional appeal.

In reflection, the Riviera Hotel evokes complex feelings. It is neither glamorous nor polished, yet it stands as a testament to perseverance and quiet hospitality. This is a place where survival and kindness intersect, where vintage charm meets raw reality, and where visitors—no matter their circumstance—can find a moment of peace. For those seeking a grounded and sincere lodging experience, the Riviera Hotel offers more than just a room; it offers a story.

I will still give them 5 stars. I came to the USA with my family with three children and we had no money at all, only $400. We arrived at this hotel from Newark airport at night at about 2 AM, we had not slept for two days, I knocked on the door and the guy who opened the door said that there was no check-in at night and we had to wait until 11 AM. Then I asked to let us in and he did. We slept in the lobby on the couch and it was very good. Then at 11 AM we rented a room and had a good rest. There is a strange area there and it looks dangerous, but we walked there and had no problems. I just want to say thank you, it was the first place in the USA that took us in and it helped us.

I ended up staying here for a few weeks until I was able to move into my new apartment. The staff was always very nice and helpful. I don’t look at it as “outdated” I absolutely love the vintage look. I definitely liked having my car parked gated with security. It may not be located in the nicest area but that didn’t bother me. My room was simple and small which is exactly what I asked for and paid for. It’s sad to see all these horrible reviews and rude comments. If you are high maintenance and picky then go somewhere else and pay a few hundred dollars a night!!!

All I know is they're housing transient people who need all the help they can get. Wish they got everything they needed to provide the best care, but the best care isn't a real thing. It was something I imagined. At least they have a place to be. Sometimes, that alone has to be enough.
